Twenty-eight games remain in the regular season for the Mariners, and six of them come against the Diamondbacks, owners of the worst record in the National League. While most of that came from an absolutely brutal May and June where they went a combined 8-48, their pitching has struggled all season, and it’s not like they’ve been good lately, coming off an 11-18 August. Still, though, as we saw with the Tigers earlier this year, it would be foolish to roll into Phoenix expecting an easy sweep.
With a declining but still decent Madison Bumgarner taking the hill for the D’Backs, I’m a little surprised that Luis Torrens is out of the lineup despite the DH not being an option. Oh, well, I’m sure he’ll be pinch hitting plenty this series. Seattle Prep alum Stuart Fairchild is starting in left for Arizona, as well, who is running out a markedly more right-handed lineup than Seattle is. Tyler Anderson is going for the Mariners, looking to both continue the excellent stretch of pitching he’s had since coming over from the Pirates and bash his second home run of the season.
