the final installment in the cole irvin saga

MLB: Seattle Mariners at Oakland Athletics Neville E. Guard-USA TODAY Sports

Now that the Mariners have clinched a winning record, they can set their sights on loftier achievements like, say, finishing ahead of the A’s in the standings. In order to do so, the M’s will need to continue to shell their favorite punching bag tonight: none other than Cole “A Team Like That” Irvin himself.

Here are the numbers on just how well his three starts against the Mariners have gone for him so far:

A key piece here is the steady decline in innings pitched. If the tabulated data isn’t clear enough, I hope this data visualization helps.

I’ve included a line of best fit to make the downward trend more apparent. Mr. Irvin, I regret to inform you that the cold, hard data suggests you may not make it through the third this time around. Sabermetrics never lie.

And now, the lineup:

Flexen was Irvin’s opponent the last time these teams faced off, going 6.2 innings and allowing only a single run.

Let’s go for a repeat of that. Check the recap for an updated version of that riveting graph!
