What Logan Gilbert did yesterday was pretty special. He carved up the Yankees to the tune of zero earned runs over 7.0 innings pitched, all while allowing just one hit. When someone like Aaron Judge looks bamboozled by you, you’ve done alright.
So special was Logan Gilbert’s outing, in fact, that we haven’t seen many starts like it over the course of Mariners history. Yesterday was Gilbert’s tenth career start. We’ve seen exactly 21 games in history which a Mariners starter who has made 10 or fewer career starts has pitched at least 7.0 innings and allowed zero earned runs. There are some truly excellent names on this list, names that will have visions of a dominant Gilbert cementing his place in Mariner history for years to come.
There are also some... other names on this list.
You will also notice that there were zero such games recorded between 1991 and 2003. Gosh, it really was not fun to be a pitcher in the steroid era.
