Game one of The Most Important Series Of The Year could have gone better from the Seattle Mariners perspective. The M’s got the absolute best version imaginable of Oakland Athletics southpaw Sean Manaea and could not muster much of anything. Tonight, at last, the lefty-heavy hitting M’s get a right-handed pitcher in Frankie Montas, albeit far from a walk in the park. Seattle is putting up LHP Yusei Kikuchi to oppose him, the club’s lone All-Star who has struggled in his past couple starts. While Michael Ajeto just dropped an article on that particular topic, we can only hope Kikuchi can overcome the righty-heavy A’s lineup tonight and get the M’s back on track to gaining ground this weekend in their improbably playoff hunt.
The M’s are running out what may be their most questionable defensive lineup imaginable, giving Mitch Haniger a day off in the field and putting a pretty hefty amount of faith in the glovework of J.P. Crawford, Kyle Seager, and Jarred Kelenic.
