Tonight the Seattle Mariners don their mighty uniforms once more and will attempt to dig themselves out of the roughly 40-50 feet of burial mulch their Vedder Cup rivals buried them beneath last night. The San Diego Padres look every bit the part of a World Series contender, even if they don’t get to face the M’s each night in October, but they’ve scarcely clicked as dominantly as they did in the 16-1 throttling they delivered to their bedraggled northern neighbors last night. Tonight, Justus Sheffield will attempt to stem the tide, working with Tom Murphy who takes another back-to-back behind the dish after getting an early hook in last night’s blowout to rest his knees. Jack Mayfield is somehow one of the older hands present, with newcomer (again) Jacob Nottingham manning first base once more.

The Padres will rest Manny Machado and Trent Grisham tonight, giving Seattle a mild respite from some of the Dads’ most potent hitters, though nothing Seattle has done lately would suggest they threaten San Diego. But hey, it’s baseball.
