The first day of March Madness is always one of my favorite sports days of the year. Having an excuse to lounge around all day and make sweeping declarations about players, teams, and coaches I’ve never heard of is a welcome springtime tradition. Throw in a Mariners Catcus League game in the evening and we’ve got a whole day of athletes who I’ll become obsessed with for two hours then never think of ever again.
Luckily, today’s Mariner game has nine starters, plus a starting pitcher, who I’m much more interested in long-term. Seattle is going with a lineup card of MLB talent, and yes I’m including Jarred Kelenic in that. Kelenic will get the start in centerfield tonight, allowing him to show off the Steve Finley and Jim Edmonds part of his game that so many scouts seem to question.
Chicago’s throwing a familiar foe, as Lance Lynn will get his chance to see the Mariners in their baby blues. This is a nice challenge for Kelenic and Jake Fraley, the only other member of this starting lineup who still has something to prove this spring. The White Sox are cranking out a roughly 75 percent intriguing starting lineup, and this is all going to be broadcast on regional television.
Even if your alma mater took a wild embarrassing L today, at least we can watch Jarred Kelenic, Marco Gonzales, and Kyle Lewis from the comfort of our
sketchy streams cable boxes.
