Believe it or not, there are just three games left in the Mariners season. It’s been a surreal ride, fraught with subpar play and the presence of Phil Ervin. Don’t get me wrong, though. The highs have been great (thanks, Kyle Lewis), and maybe, just maybe, enough to convince the team to try to get into win-soon mode instead of win-in-a-while mode.
Today’s game marks Justus Sheffield’s final start of the season. Sheffield came into 2020 with as many question marks as anybody in what promised to be a make-or-break season for the former centerpiece of the James Paxton trade. By all indications, he’s delivered. Justus has thrown 50.1 innings of 3.08 FIP baseball. Over a full season he’s been on pace for at least 4.0 fWAR. If you’ve been looking for encouraging signs of progress in the 2020 Marienrs, Justus has been one of them.
He’ll be taking on the A’s, which has seemingly never become a less boring proposition over the years, regardless of how good they actually are.
