It’s been a weird year, so it fits that Day One of the MLB Draft was also weird. Kate and Joe got together to chat about who the Mariners picked and why, and what might happen tomorrow.
0 - 7:00: The Tigers picked Spencer Torkelson first overall, and then the draft board blew up. Kate and Joe analyze the wackiness of the top five before getting into the Mariners’ pick of Emerson Hancock.
7:00 - 21:00: Breaking down the pick and Hancock’s skillset. Where does he slot in on the Mariners’ top 10 draft list, and how does the Mariners’ staff of pitching prospects compare to the league as a whole? Who has the higher ceiling, Hancock or Gilbert? Kate and Joe also discuss the Mariners’ recently-lauded pitching development and what that could mean for Hancock’s trajectory.
21:00 -26:00: Moving to the draft as a whole and looking at some draft steals. A chance for Kate to talk about Robert Hassell one last time.
26:00-33:00: Analyzing whose draft has created intense feelings of envy so far, and whose draft strategy is more perplexing. A lot of NL West discussion here.
33:00-46:00: Discussing the best available names and what the Mariners might do moving forward on the second and final day of the draft.
46:00-49:00: How will the draftees get developed if there’s no Everett AquaSox season?
49:00-55:00: What will make the 2020 draft a success for Seattle? Joe pounds his fist and demands a prep. Kate stamps her foot and demands a catcher. Both just really want someone with a personality to root for.
55:00 - end: Addressing the very fair question “who the hell will play infield for this team?” with a look at the upcoming free agent classes.
Music: In honor of our newest Mariner and an attempt to make a Georgia boy comfortable in the wilds of the PNW: “That’s My Kind of Night” by Luke Bryan; “Out Last Night” by Kenny Cheney
