Look, I don’t know how to tell you this, but MLB rules state that each team must complete its entire 162-game season. These rules unfortunately still apply to pre-determined fixtures between the Astros and Mariners, two teams that have gone in completely opposite directions since the 2019 schedule was released.
Even worse, the Astros are still trying!
Though they’ve already clinched a third consecutive AL West title, Houston and New York are still fighting for home field advantage. Should the Astros and Yankees clash in a theoretical ALCS, I imagine it would resemble two rival packs of wolverines fighting over a moose carcass.
The Mariners have been much more moose carcass than wolverine this season. But as far as playing out the string games go, tonight’s is made more palatable by a Justin Dunn start. Dunn has thrown just 2.2 innings thus far in his career and has been ravaged by an infection of walks. Given his struggles against the Reds and Pirates, who each have one foot in Cancun at this point, I shudder to think how he’ll fare against the class of the American League.
Let’s all watch and discuss in the virtual sports bar below.
