What is this feeling, so sudden and new?

September always holds an unusual promise for the fans of poor teams (like the Mariners). The dog days of August see withering veterans and incompetent utility players pockmark the lineups of the league’s lower class. Come September 1st, rosters are expanded, and lineups are infused with a shot of youth.

To be perfectly honest, July and August sucked for the Mariners. Yeah, they lost, but they mostly lost in completely unenjoyable ways. It was hard to watch the team, and it was no small wonder that our attention mostly shifted toward the minors.

Well, the minors are in Seattle, and they’re here in style. Kyle Lewis has had a legendary start to his MLB career, and that start has earned him the cleanup spot tonight.

That’s a nice-looking top five (with apologies to Daniel Vogelbach). Here’s hoping Félix Hernández brings his A-game tonight in what could be (again) one of his last-ever starts in Seattle. If not, it looks like we could be in for another barn-burner on the heels of last night’s 9-7 affair.
