Every so often, the Mariners get to shine on the national stage. Famously, they went over a decade between Sunday Night Baseball appearances, but the odd opportunity to play one of the league’s east coast flagships gave the M’s a chance to share the spotlight. Today, as the team plays their first game at .500 since Opening Day, they’ll share that ESPN national broadcast shine with the New York Yankees.
The Mariners have the more interesting roster by leaps and bounds at the moment, as the Yankees swath of injuries leaves them with their most notable players being those adored by prospect hounds over casual fans. Luke Voit, Clint Frazier, Gleyber Torres, and Miguel Andujar are formidable hitters, but even after an interminable stretch of losing and the past two games, Seattle outpaces New York in HRs, runs, wRC+, ISO, OPS, you name it. Tonight they also bring their most fascinating starting pitcher, with Yusei Kikuchi looking to follow his best outing of the season in Cleveland. Jonathan Loaisiga has been a mixture of unhittable and uncontrolled this year, in line with his prior limitations that have kept his outings brief. Tim Beckham receives a scheduled off day as well.
