Early in the season, when things were good, there seemed to be a brief moment of “what will we do with Kyle Seager when he returns?” Now things are bad, and he is back, and our hopes that he single-handedly (although they both work now!) right this ship and set us back on the course to at least be able to see .500 don’t seem unreasonable at all.
Yusei Kikuchi’s last start was also the Mariners’ last win - a 7-4 victory over the Twins in which Kukuchi gave up 1 earned run (3 total) on 5 hits over 6 innings, striking out 6 and walking 2. The two unearned runs were caused by Kikuchi’s own error, making them maybe the most earned of all the unearned runs our pitchers have enjoyed this season, but he did manage to drop his ERA down to 3.43.
Mike Fiers, owner of a 5.05 ERA and somehow a recent no-hitter, is coming off a 6-inning effort against the Tigers that was postponed in the 7th inning, with the A’s up 5-3, before any rain actually fell. In the first 6 innings Fiers allowed 3 runs, all earned, on 4 hits, with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts. In his previous start, Fiers was defeated 6-5 by Yusei Kikuchi and these Seattle Mariners.
