In which the Mariners attempt to ascend to .500

Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

Fresh off of a two-game sweep (it still counts, okay?) of the Oakland Athletics and a day off to boot, the Mariners will take on the hated Minnesota Twins the evening.

Erik Swanson will be getting the start for the Mariners. Swanson struggled in his last start against the Red Sox, although it was in Fenway Park, which is essentially training wheels in ballpark form. Swanson should perform better in spacious T-Mobile Park. The last time he pitched here, he... oh. He gave up six earned runs in four innings against the Rangers. Well.

Facing Swanson will be an old friend, Michael Pineda. After missing all of last season with injury, Pineda has struggled this season to the tune of 5.35 FIP and 5.85 ERA. The Mariners will hope to jump on Pineda early and get to the Twins’ bullpen in the first game of this series.

Today's Lineups

Max Kepler - RF Dee Gordon - 2B
Jorge Polanco - SS Mitch Haniger - RF
Jonathan Schoop - 2B Edwin Encarnacion - 1B
Eddie Rosario - LF Daniel Vogelbach - DH
C.J. Cron - DH Domingo Santana - LF
Marwin Gonzalez - 1B Omar Narvaez - C
Miguel Sano - 3B Ryon Healy - 3B
Jason Castro - C J.P. Crawford - SS
Byron Buxton - CF Mallex Smith - CF

Notably, Mallex Smith is back in the lineup after being recalled from Tacoma today. Nelson Cruz, meanwhile, is day-to-day with a wrist injury and won’t play today, which can only be good news for the Mariners. C.J. Cron doesn’t quite strike fear into the hearts of pitchers like Cruz does.
