Marco Gonzales vs. Mike Minor in a battle of the lefties

MLB: Seattle Mariners at Los Angeles Angels Kiyoshi Mio-USA TODAY Sports

The Mariners are out of it, and limping down the home stretch against the worst team in the division, who happened to embarrass them last night in a rain-shortened affair, 7-0. If you’ve given up on watching the games, I don’t blame you. There was nothing fun about watching Erasmo Ramirez serve up fat meatballs in the middle of the plate, except the potential idea that the team won’t rely on Ramírez as a fifth starter next year if he continues stinking it up down the stretch.

Another thing to watch for in these last few games: how Marco Gonzales rebounds from some injury issues and fatigue in his first full season as a starter in the majors. Marco’s FIP jumped all the way from the mid-3s to almost 5 over the month of August; over ten innings in September, his numbers seem to be improving, although the K-BB ratio isn’t yet back to his excellent June-July numbers. Not getting enough bite on his curveball is a reliable sign of fatigue, so that’s something to keep an eye on over these last couple appearances.
