Although Mitch Haniger is back in the lineup today after sitting yesterday out, his bruised knee still might not be 100%. The return of John Andreoli gives the club another right-handed option in the outfield, and his ability to cover all three outfield spots is a nice feature. Andreoli played well in his big league debut on May 23rd, notching his first big league hit and making a potentially game-saving running catch, and could see more action if the M’s want to give Haniger or Guillermo Heredia a breather or two.
To make room, Nick Rumbelow was optioned down back to Tacoma. After battling neck issues much of the year, he made six appearances with the big club - though he’s only seen action in two games since June 23rd. His 5.16 FIP over 7.1 innings isn’t great, but Rumbelow showed some ability to miss bats and walked just one batter in that span. With an off day Monday and the All-Star Break coming up in just over a week, an eight-man bullpen isn’t as necessary, and one could bet that Rumbelow will be back up soon after the second half begins.
