Despite a fairly dispiriting weekend, the Mariners enter Monday with a larger lead in the second Wild Card standings than they had before it all started, thanks to the Rockies’ sweep of the Athletics. Today, the league-leading Houston Astros come to town toting their ace, Gerrit Cole. Well, really just one of their aces, since their rotation is simply bonkers.
Of course, Trader Jerry decided to make some roster moves today to shake things up just before the deadline. Trading for Adam Warren and Zach Duke may not be the same thing as acquiring Justin Verlander, but bullpen reinforcements are certainly welcomed.

Yes, that’s Andrew Romine at third base. Yes, he might stick there for a few days since Kyle Seager is on paternity leave (best wishes, Julie & Kyle!). But at least Denard Span is hitting third yet again, which is A-okay in my book.
