Rejoice! After a week of playing the two teams with the most wins in MLB, the Mariners now get a week of games against literally the two worst teams in the American League. First up, the Baltimore Orioles.
To say the O’s have been a dumpster fire this year would be an insult to actual dumpster fires. If I saw a real life dumpster engulfed in flames on my walk home, I could at least stand there for a few seconds and marvel at its perverse beauty. Eventually, of course, I would call the fire department to ensure that the chaos does not expand to other innocent bystanders. If the Mariners light Andrew Cashner on fire in the early innings tonight, I may call the Baltimore Fire Department anyway before things get out of hand.
Something to keep an eye on as the dumpster fire ravages on: the race between Baltimore’s futility and their best player’s magnificence. As Connor Donovan pointed out on June 3, Manny Machado’s batting average was higher than his team’s winning percentage. Today, that race has flipped, with Baltimore’s winning percentage (.303) just narrowly ahead of Machado’s average (.301). You up, Dodgers?
Also, Chris Davis is on pace for the worst season of anyone to ever play the game of baseball.
Thank you and good night.
