The one where the Mariners remember how to hit the ball

Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

Well, as underwhelming as the offense felt in last night’s game, it could have been a lot worse. There were glimpses, and Félix Hernández looked better than he has for most of the season. It feels a lot worse because it was a game that the Mariners could have easily won, but if they were going to lose a game in this series, it was probably going to be that one.

This one, though. If they’re going to win a game in this series, it’s probably going to be this one. So hopefully the offense can look a little better in support of James Paxton than it did for Félix.

Today's Lineups

BOSTON RED SOX SEATTLE MARINERS
Mookie Betts - RF Dee Gordon - 2B
Brock Holt - 2B Jean Segura - SS
J.D. Martinez - LF Mitch Haniger - RF
Mitch Moreland - 1B Nelson Cruz - DH
Xander Bogaerts - SS Kyle Seager - 3B
Rafael Devers - 3B Ryon Healy - 1B
Eduardo Nunez - DH Ben Gamel - LF
Jackie Bradley - CF Guillermo Heredia - CF
Sandy Leon - C Mike Zunino - C
Rick Porcello - RHP James Paxton - LHP

Denard Span is getting a day off in favor of Ben Gamel. Span and Gamel both hit lefty, of course, but this is probably more about getting Gamel some at bats than Span having time taken away from him. I would imagine Span will be available to pinch hit later in the game (maybe for Mike Zunino...).

It’s also worth noting that Edwin Díaz and Álex Colomé have both rested since Tuesday, so the best part of the Mariners bullpen should be at full strength for tonight, and possibly available through the entire weekend.
