Hello and welcome to your Wednesday/miércoles/Odin’s day dose of Mariners baseball. Tonight, Mike Leake takes the mound against Houston’s older-looking-but-somehow-younger version of him: Gerrit Cole. Interestingly enough, the Mariners have yet to lose a game started by Leake. Just as interesting but not as fun: the Astros have yet to lose a game started by Cole.
Cole currently leads the American League in strikeouts (36). In his last game against the Rangers, he struck out 14 batters; the first four with his fastball, the next six with the curve and changeup, and the last four with sliders and a fastball. This may be cause for alarm, considering the fact that Mariners batters were a little strikeout happy last night, striking out a season-high total of 14 times. Here’s hoping for less of that and more sweet sweet Canó bombs.
Also, if you hadn’t heard/didn’t look at the image above, hair-flipping outfielder and professional Poseidon impersonator Ben Gamel returns to the lineup tonight for his first game of the season. Now’s the time to whip out your Gamel caps and bring the team some good juju.
Go M’s!
