Earlier today, the Mariners formally announced what we’ve all known for a few days: Ichiro is coming back.
The return of Ichiro comes at a time when the M’s are in dire need of some outfield help. With three of the four projected MLB outfielders nursing injuries of various severities, Ichiro provides some much-needed outfield depth and a nostalgic presence for the fans.
When it comes to the fanbase, there seem to be two major schools of thought with regards to the signing. Let’s take a look at what those people are saying.
People who are excited about Ichiro’s return...
You: resigning Ichiro might sound fun but his inevitable poor production will be a melancholic end to an iconic career— maatt (@matthiasellis) March 5, 2018
Me, an intellectual: HELLLLLLL YEEAAAAAAAHHHHH ICHIROOOOOO
It's only fitting that Ichiro bookends his career with Mariners playoffs appearances.— Ichi-Joe Veyera (@JoeVeyera) March 5, 2018
If you think my desire to see a winning ballclub is gonna get in my heart's way of wanting an Ackley-Gordon-Ichiro outfield, then boy lemme tell you— Ethan (@EthanNovak) March 5, 2018
GO 0-162 I DONT CARE IF WE HAVE ICHIRO— Josh ☭ (@josh__kuh) March 5, 2018
If you thought the mariners were fun before, wait til you see Jean grinning that goofy-assed grin at an icy-faced Ichiro, before everyone dissolves into giggles— Tim (@eutimioc2) March 6, 2018
People who are cautious about Ichiro’s return...
Mariners outfielder Ben Gamel has an oblique strain and is out 4-6 weeks. And, no, I don't believe they should bring Ichiro back.— Ryan Divish (@RyanDivish) March 5, 2018
ME: I wonder how well Ichiro's running game has aged— Jeff Sullivan (@based_ball) March 5, 2018
ME: I guess that's why they calculate sprint speed!
ME: so let's just take a quick look at 2017, and-
Me, through tears: Not every move the Mariners make is proof that the front office doesn't want to win— Ichi-Joe Veyera (@JoeVeyera) March 6, 2018
You, pointing at Ichiro: They don't want to win
The problem isn’t Ichiro relative to Ben Gamel, the problem is Ichiro relative to many other guys they could have signed, for me.— David Skiba (@SkibaScubaShop) March 6, 2018
Some additional fun facts...
This is David Phelps' 7th major-league season, and he has been teammates with Ichiro every year. If reports of Ichiro signing with #Mariners are true, that streak will continue with 3rd different team.— Larry Stone (@StoneLarry) March 5, 2018
Ichiro is on the Mariners— Brooks Knudsen (@BrooksKnudsen) March 5, 2018
Pablo Sandoval is on the Giants
Lorenzo Cain is on the Brewers
Matt Kemp is on the Dodgers
