This week Kate and Ben are joined by right-handed pitcher Tommy Romero, who the Mariners drafted in the fifteenth round in 2017. Not heavily recruited after high school, Romero went the JUCO route. At Eastern Florida State College, Romero led NJCAA Division I baseball in strikeouts and was fifth in ERA with a 1.13. His K/9 was almost 14 for the year. The Mariners drafted the 6’2” pitcher in the fifteenth round, and eager to begin his pro career, Romero signed. After college, as a member of the AZL Mariners, Romero pitched 43 additional innings with an impressive 10.59 K/9 and 3.12 BB/9 with an FIP of just 3.03. The Florida native joins us to talk about the progress of his baseball career and experiences in the Mariners organization so far. Most notably, he talks about spending time in the Mariners’ player development program, and the physical improvements he’s made in a short time in high performance camp that are setting him up for a big season this year.
We recorded this week’s episode a little differently, with a call-in format. Sorry if it’s a little jarring at times, and that there’s no music this week.
Note: If you’re searching for the podcast to subscribe (and we would love it if you did) please be aware that it is listed as simply “Lookout Landing” and not “Lookout Landing 2.0” which is understandably confusing. We’re sorry.
Enjoy! Leave feedback! And go Mariners.
