This might seem ridiculous, but one of my favorite parts of February is that if the 18th of February is a Sunday, then the 18th of March will also be a Sunday. It makes planning so much easier. Do you all feel the same way?
In Mariners News...
- Felix Hernandez is scheduled to make his first start of the spring on February 26th. There’s a good chance I will not make it to class that day.
CORRECTION: Felix's first game is against the Cubs, but I had the date wrong. He's scheduled to face Cubs on Feb. 26 in Mesa, then the Angels on March 3. https://t.co/hCDWKHRaaz

- The Mariners told Mike Ford that he might play a little corner outfield.
- Edwin Diaz may just be 23 years old, but he wants to bring a little veteran experience to the closer role.
- Tommy Romero, a pitcher in the Mariners’ organization, expressed his condolences for the Parkland, Florida community, which is very close to where he went to school.

- Hisashi Iwakuma shared his joy with us on Instagram.
- David Phelps and Tony Zych threw bullpens next to each other yesterday.

- If only I could rock a mustache like this.
Just one question... how great is the mustache James Pazos is sporting this year? #Mariners #SpringTraining pic.twitter.com/LFwVteJ96B

Around the League...
- The Rays made a couple trades today. Here was the first.
We have acquired 1B CJ Cron from the Angels for a PTBNL.
— Tampa Bay Rays (@RaysBaseball) February 18, 2018
To make room on the 40-man roster, we have designated Corey Dickerson for assignment. pic.twitter.com/wDK3sN7Yen
- Then this happened.
Only Jermaine Palacios headed to Tampa Bay Rays as Twins acquire Jake Odorizzi.
— Dan Hayes (@DanHayesMLB) February 18, 2018
- This is accurate.

- Then this happened.
The #Padres got their man. Eric Hosmer is their new first baseman. https://t.co/ox6tAoeDVe
— Kevin Acee (@sdutKevinAcee) February 18, 2018
- Eric Hosmer’s deal is front-loaded.
I’m told Eric Hosmer’s annual salary is higher over the first 5 years than the final 3. Scott Boras wanted to structure the deal such that a large majority of the overall guarantee would come before the opt-out.
— Jon Morosi (@jonmorosi) February 18, 2018
- Corey Dickerson got DFA’d and Eric Hosmer got a long term deal. Given that, this is interesting.
I'm not sharing the whole projections yet (I may write a piece), but I have Hosmer 0.5 WAR more valuable than Corey Dickerson for the next five years. Oh, that's not per.
— Dan Szymborski (@DSzymborski) February 18, 2018
- Rajai Davis might end up with the Indians.
Rajai Davis is in the Indians clubhouse, but he respectfully declined comment until his deal with Tribe is official. Still has to go through physical process.
— Jordan Bastian (@MLBastian) February 17, 2018
- The Giants signed Tony Watson to a three year deal.
Tony Watson Contract: 3 years,

$7 million. #SFGiants
- Tony Watson’s contact is more than meets the eye.
watson gets 9M guarantee that could become 21M with escalators, as @jcrasnick said. some envisioned higher guarantee but with 55 games each year the escalators max out, and the durable watson has 67-plus games last 6 years. so good chance for 21M. #SFGiants

- Some interesting closer facts from Mike Pertriello.
The last 7 World Series champs had a different closer in Oct than they did in April. 2017 had fewest 30-save RP in decades.
— Mike Petriello (@mike_petriello) February 17, 2018
If you don't like your closer right now, in Feb, don't worry. It probably doesn't matter.https://t.co/T3jDPQZaN3
- Shohei Ohtani won’t get the opportunity to play everyday for the Angels.

- Seung-Hwan Oh is not signing with the Rangers.
- Low key the coolest competition ever.
Give me the Korean Baseball Organization’s bunt contest over the dunk contest any day. Just electric entertainment. ( : @MyKBO) pic.twitter.com/qHOb75wPXq

- CC Sabathia is becoming a new pitcher later in his career.
Luke’s Picks...
- Isaiah Thomas got his number retired by the Washington Huskies last night and it was amazing.
It’s official.

Congrats, @isaiahthomas. #2TheRafters pic.twitter.com/aPbvtySVXF
- The Huskies went on to get their 18th victory of the season, doubling their win total from the season before.
DUBS UP.
