The curtain call of James Paxton

gimme some skin
Lance Iversen-USA TODAY Sports

Hello, and Happy Tuesday! Welcome to the second game of this three-game set against the Athletics. Or, if you prefer, the fifth-to-last game of the season. The best thing about this game is that JAMES PAXTON is pitching. The worst thing about this game is that this is his last start of the season. Also, the whole “Mariners are out of the playoffs” thing.

Any way, here are the lineups.

Today's Lineups

SEATTLE MARINERS OAKLAND A'S
Ben Gamel - LF Marcus Semien - SS
Mitch Haniger - CF Matt Chapman - 3B
Robinson Cano - 2B Jed Lowrie - 2B
Nelson Cruz - DH Khris Davis - LF
Yonder Alonso - 1B Ryon Healy - 1B
Mike Zunino - C Mark Canha - RF
Danny Valencia - RF Renato Nunez - DH
Gordon Beckham - 3B Josh Phegley - C
Taylor Motter - SS Jake Smolinski - CF
James Paxton - LHP Daniel Mengden - RHP

Of interest: Dan Vogelbach isn’t playing. Doesn’t make a ton of sense to play Yonder Alonso when the team is already eliminated. Perhaps they’re just trying to keep on good terms with Yonder in hopes of re-signing him? Seems suspect. Meanwhile, Gordon Beckham is playing third base and Taylor Motter is playing shortstop. This game will either be a win for Team Fun or a big loss for quality baseball. Maybe both.
