Mariners vs. The Shadow Mariners

Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

Tonight the Mariners begin a series against the Tampa Bay Rays, a team that is the Mariners in another time or place. I hope it will be fun to watch those familiar faces on the other side. The fun, of course, will come from beating them.

Tonight's game is also being broadcast on Facebook. MLB is using the Root Sports feed, but there are no blackout restrictions. Nice to see MLB trying to reach the youths.

The Mariners used to be at the forefront of sports technology. Late in 1994 they became the first professional sports team with an internet presence. The next year, they became the first team to broadcast the radio feed of a game against the Yankees over the web. No gifs as we know them, or video back in those days, but I still remember the fun of looking up the Mariners Home Plate in my school's computer lab. Ah, the 90s.

On to the lineups!
