Happy Friday, LLers. Are you tired of spring training baseball yet? Hopefully not. There’s still a whoooole bunch left! There aren’t too many battles of note this spring, but it will be interesting to see how the bullpen takes shape. There’s some good talent in the ol’ bullpen pile this year, but there’s also a whole bunch of youth. In addition to the very young, very fun Edwin Diaz, one third of the pitchers currently listed on the Mariners relief corps depth chart would be rookies in 2017 (Altavilla, Vieira, Pazos, and Zych). Regardless of who actually ends up on the 25-man to start the year, many of these guys will definitely see time with the M’s in 2017.
With this fact in mind, I give you today’s Sporcle quiz: Can you name the M’s relievers who recorded 40 or more strikeouts during their rookie campaign? This has been accomplished by 31 different players. How many of them can you remember? (More than two thirds of these rookie seasons occurred in the 21st century, so this might be easier than you think.) Good luck!
And go M’s.
Note: If a player served as both a starter and a reliever during his rookie campaign, only the strikeouts that were recorded while pitching in relief are counted here.
