Hello folks! I don’t know about you, but I’m getting a little impatient waiting for the regular season to begin.
While we await baseball season to get underway, major things are happening elsewhere in the sports world. Yesterday a vote to relocate the Oakland Raiders to Las Vegas passed by a 31-1 vote.
It’s moments like these that make me extremely thankful that baseball is as stable as it is. Compared to other leagues, MLB teams virtually never move to new cities. Seattle has been stung by a relocation in the past of course — in basketball — and the Mariners nearly moved to Tampa Bay 20 years ago. Yet our hometown nine still remains after more than 40 years, which is considered extremely young for a baseball franchise.
The NFL has a whole host of problems. The California teams move seemingly every year. I’m just happy to be a baseball fan where I never have to worry about my team leaving.
On that note, let’s see what else is going on in baseball.
In Mariners news...
- Jarrod Dyson will hopefully be ready to go for Opening Day. The outfielder has been dealing with some leg soreness recently, which hopefully will not impact his production going forward.
- Steve Cishek and Tony Zych hope to return to action in April.
Around the league...
- This youngster believes he’s Lou Gehrig reincarnated. A book has been written about him already. A movie might be in the works too.
- Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge has cut down on his strikeout totals. Travis Sawchik at Fangraphs thinks that simple improvement could transcend the outfielder into a star.
- Jose Canseco has been hired by NBC Sports in California to serve as an analyst.
- Can Shelby Miller redeem the Diamondbacks after his terrible season? Dave Cameron at Fangraphs says things are pointing in the right direction.
- Corey Seager graced the latest cover of ESPN the Magazine. I guess that’s another tally for Corey in the everlasting battle against Kyle.
- The Cardinals are working on a contract extension with catcher Yadier Molina.
Anders’ picks...
- More UW men’s basketball news as some more roster decisions were announced yesterday.
