My heart is heavy this morning. Two games against the team they needed to surpass have ended in disappointment. Today's game was, by projection, the most difficult game for the Mariners to win this series, so I have confidence they will take the Blue Jays behind the woodshed this afternoon. Aaron Sanchez has been the ace of the Blue Jays staff this year, but after a blistering start to the season he has faded in the twilight of summer. Félix Hernández is pitching and it is difficult to say what that may mean. Hopefully he has been able to make some adjustments, or will just have a better feel for his fastball. Jesús Sucre will start to catch his countryman, which, sure, fine, but that doesn't make Iannetta'/ start last night feel very sensible. This team, unequivocally, is at least a better hitting team than they have shown the past few games, and they will need to remember that to have a shot today/the rest of the season.
The Mariners are pretty much dead, though technically less dead than they were before their winning streak. They no longer have much control over their fate, however, so we must wait and hope.
