Though plenty of fun was had in the stands of Safeco Field last night, there was little joy to be found on the field. I got to see many of you at the game last night, which was great, and subsequently saw very little of the game last night, which was also great because good grief it sounds like it was some vintage Mariners baseball. Fortunately this sport doesn’t make us wait another whole week for redemption and tonight, if the Mariners win, we’ll be able to move pass the grotesque events of Friday evening.
The M’s will face off against thirty-one-year-old righty Mike Fiers. They’ve seen him only one other time this season, on July 6th, when he lasted only 3.1 innings and gave up four runs off of five hits, including three homeruns. He’s been pretty generally unspectacular all season, having allowed 172 hits in just 151.1 innings of work, and since the Mariners offense all got the night off last night they should be able to get something going.
Save for Mike Zunino, tonight’s starting lineup is largely the same as what it was back in May, which could be seen as either good or bad. No Vogelbach, no Gamel, and no Heredia, which means no 2/3 ALL CUBAN OF. There’s nothing terribly exciting here, but this is a lineup that’s demonstrated general competency throughout the last five months or so, and they’re well-designed to mash against righties. James Paxton takes the mound for the Mariners, and here’s hoping he refuses to be shown up by fellow 2010 draftee Taijuan Walker and pitches a gem of his own tonight.
