Today the Mariners kick off the beginning of the Vedder Cup against their natural rivals, the Padres. It's also Memorial Day so some of you aren't watching at all and are instead at a beach or paying respects to our servicemen and women somewhere or perhaps deep in a heavily wooded forest communing with nature.
This tilt features Nate Karns on the mound, who grew up as an army brat; you can see more about his story on the ROOT pregame show at 12:30. He will do battle with wooly mountain creature Andrew Cashner. Karns has never played the Padres, but has been one of the less volatile pitchers in the starting rotation, going 4-0 with a 3.13 ERA over his last eight starts. Cashner sports a 4.87 ERA but is coming off a hot effort against the Giants where the Padres almost beat them before that guy from the insurance commercial with the fishing pole and hip waders showed up.
TV: You're probably on a raft somewhere and can't watch, aren't you? You're floating peacefully in a lake. ROOT, as always.
RADIO: If you get reception out there in the woods, KIRO has the call. Let's grind some meat.
