Mike Montgomery vs. Ian Kennedy

Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

The last game of June is finally upon us.

Unless you've had the good fortune of being on vacation for the past month and not checking the Internet or any sort of news outlet at all, you're quite well aware that the Mariners have had a rough go round in June.

The pitching has been halfway decent, but the offense has been beyond abysmal. That translates to a month where the Mariners went 10-16 and tried real damn hard to play themselves out of any sort of contention for the rest of the season. That said, the season ain't over yet, and the hope hasn't fully died on us. So what better way than to turn a new leaf and get a head start on a new month by taking on our natural rivals, the San Diego Padres.

Mike Montgomery is coming off of his franchise-history making start last week where he became the first Mariner lefty to strike out ten and walk none in a shutout. Montgomery has been stellar in his past five games and he will need to continue this solid streak, because most likely, the offense isn't going to provide much buffer room.

Then again, Ian Kennedy is having a bit of a rough year. He sports a FIP of 5.17 and has had a bit of trouble keeping the ball in the park, with a lofty HR/FB rate of 21.7 percent. Excluding a wild go against the Giants in his last start, Kennedy has settled down a bit (although he has given up a home run in three consecutive starts).

July isn't quite here for the Mariners, yet. But it isn't too far away.
