I am writing this on the ferry on my way to Safeco (come say hi, you) so I don't have a lot of time to get this done. The route is circumventing its usual Vashon waystation so I'm extra pressed. Sometimes convenience is the enemy.
Felix is great. Last Friday he was not great and over his last 6 starts he is running a 5.56 ERA with a 4.5 BB/9. The good news is he is still striking people out and claims to be injury free. The great news is last Friday wasn't at home because that would have been too tragic to consider, even for the Mariners.
Madison Bumgarner is like Felix in that he is surprisingly young given how long he has been around. 2015 is Bumgarner's 5th full season in the major leagues and only last year could easily rent a car. He also resembles Felix in that he is consistently excellent, having never posted an fWAR below 3 and only once below 4. This year finds him on a similar pace. Bumgarner is NOT like Felix in his demeanor; a combination of folksy aw shucks and regal restraint that has garnered him membership in the Cabal of the Unwritten Rules at a preternaturally early age.
Willie Bloomquist is in left tonight with a lefty on the hill. Justin Ruggiano/Franklin Gutierrez/you/me blah blah blah.
There are a lot of things that are annoying about this team right now but it's nothing that a beautiful evening and vintage Felix can't temporarily make us forget. Win. Win and grant us reprieve from the unbearable burden of reality. Win.
