J.A. Happ vs Sonny Gray

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

As you may have heard, the Seattle Mariners season ended last night after an abysmal 12-0 loss to the Oakland Athletics. It remains only a matter of time until Jack Z and the gang send down Taijuan Walker to work on his stuff, ship off the nine remaining years of Cano's contract for prospects, halve ticket prices and eventually turn Safeco into a pile of bricks in preparation for the inevitable collapse of civilization that will leave a trail of urban graveyards stretching from the Pacific to the Atlantic.

And yet, for reasons utterly baffling and incomprehensible, they are all going to go out there and play some more baseball this afternoon. It's surprising, really, because I don't think anyone realizes that it's nearly impossible to come back from a 1-3 deficit in a sport that has less than 165 opportunities to gain a spot in the standings. Maybe they just want to get J.A. Happ out there to try and salvage some value from the guy. Rough, really, when you think that he never got a chance to pitch in a single meaningful game as a Seattle Mariner.

If you weren't convinced that Lloyd has no intention of winning this game, look no further than to the player batting in the M's two hole this afternoon. Seth Smith, who only played in a single game all year, will be getting his second start now that the playoff push is over, and if they thought they could win without him, I'm not sure what they think they will be able to do with him. And Jesus Sucre getting the start behind the dish? Listen: you are right to give up on this team. I can't even blame you--you made it this far.

I'd say something encouraging here, like "goms" or what have you, but it doesn't even matter anymore. So have fun today, I guess.
