The Winter Meetings have begun. Generally, this is the part of the offseason with the hottest of stoves and the hottest of takes. So while not a whole lot of actual action went down in the first day of the meetings, there was still plenty of news. The solid deals that took place were:

  • Technically before the start of the meetings, but Ryan Madson agreed to a three-year deal with the A's.
  • Chase Utley is going back to the Dodgers on a one-year deal.
  • The Tigers and Jarrod Saltalamacchia came to an agreement on a one-year contract.
  • The Tigers also inked former Mariners' reliever Mark Lowe to a multi-year deal.
  • Joakim Soria is returning to Kansas City on a multi-year contract.
  • The Royals have also signed pitcher Chris Young.
  • The Indians have claimed outfielder Joey Butler off waivers from the Rays.
  • Trevor Cahill has re-signed with the Cubs.
  • Darren O'Day, viewed as the top reliever on the free agent market, inked a multi-year deal with the Orioles.
  • And, of course, the Wade Miley deal. If you want to see other spins on the move, Jeff Sullivan had a writeup on it as did Marc W at U.S.S. Mariner.

Other than that, there were plenty of rumors and other news around the league. Let's see what we can find there:
  • The M's have signed pitcher Donn Roach to a minor league deal.
  • The Mariners have hired Amanda Hopkins as a full-time scout.
  • The M's are now rumored to be pursuing first baseman Adam Lind.
  • Chris Woodward is joining the Dodgers' coaching staff.
  • The Angels might soon target outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. This makes sense for anyone who read this post on Cespedes Family BBQ.
  • The Nationals plan to shop reliever Drew Storen.
  • The Dodgers and Reds seemed to have a deal in place sending closer Aroldis Chapman to Los Angeles, but the deal hit an unexpected snag when news broke that he had been allegedly involved in a domestic abuse incident.
  • Andrew Cashner may soon become available via trade as well.
  • Jonathan Papelbon filed grievance against the Nationals.
