Happy New Year Lookout Landing! Let's kick off the New Year with a look back at last year. After almost 300 votes, the results from my memorable Mariner moments in 2014 poll are finalized. Before we count down the top 10 results, let's take a look at some of the honorable mentions and some of the moments I missed that you guys filled in.
I've combined the community rank and my own ranking into a weighted aggregate score. Let's take at five moments that just missed the top 10.
September 3 - at Oakland Athletics
Community Vote: 6.1%
My Rank: 5th
I had this moment ranked pretty high in my own rankings but the community didn't think it was that memorable. Maybe it was the pitching matchup that was more memorable -- Felix against Lester -- or maybe it was the context -- a crucial series in Oakland after a pretty terrible homestand -- but I remember this game vividly. It also gave us one of the best Seager gifs ever:
April 25 - vs. Texas Rangers
Community Vote: 7.1%
My Rank: 7th
I was secretly hoping that this moment would have ranked higher. Wouldn't it be funny if Justin Smoak, one of the most disappointing Mariners in recent memory, made one of the plays of the year? I mean, wow. The best part is, Smoak had a go-ahead, two-run double in the eighth inning too. Way to go Justin.
April 2 - at Los Angeles Angels
Community Vote: 4.7%
My Rank: 8th
The 2014 season couldn't have started much better. Outscoring the Angels 26-8 on the road was quite an impressive feat. That three-game sweep was capped off by James Paxton's seven-inning shutout of what would turn out to be one of the best offenses in the league. It was just a hint of things to come from Paxton later in the year.
August 22 - at Boston Red Sox
Community Vote: 1.7%
My Rank: Unranked
I had the Mariners sweeping the Red Sox on my list of top moments from last year but this game came close to making that list too. The community remembers this game well as it earned a non-insignificant amount of write-in votes. Fun fact: Austin Jackson's double off the green monster was his fifth longest hit as a Mariner and one of just six extra base hits he had in the second half of the year.
September 27 - vs. Los Angeles Angels
Community Vote: 1.4%
My Rank: Unranked
Here's our second write-in response that had a significant amount of votes by the community. The great thing about this double was its timing. The Rangers had just finished off the Athletics in Texas keeping the Mariners' slim playoff hopes alive. Minutes afterwards, LoMo continued his hot streak of clutch hitting with this game-tying double. Amazing stuff.
Best Community Submissions
The community came up with a number of great moments that were missing from my list of fifteen. Some that probably should have been included (the two above) and others that were memorable for one reason or another but came up just short. Here are some of the best write-in responses:
- Endy Chavez's magic bunt
- The Nick Punto Strikeout
- Roenis Elias strikes out 10 in New York
- Alexei Ramirez buckles on a Yoervis Media curveball
- "Roenis Elias throws a center of the plate "come at me bro" fastball to Miguel Cabrera during that June 1st game"
- "Kyle Ackley"
- Jesus Montero and the Ice Cream Sandwich
Tune in next week as I reveal the top 10 Mariner moments from 2014!
