9/1: Open game thread: Hart, Smoak, Walker and more called up from Tacoma

Chris Young vs. Jason Hammel

oh, dad.
oh, dad.

Well, folks, we made it. It's September. It's September and the Mariners are playing meaningful baseball.

The M's made a few of their callups today--Corey Hart, Justin Smoak, Stefen Romero, Taijuan Walker, Lucas Luetge, Humberto Quintero, and right-handed reliever Carson Smith. Jesus Montero has been suspended after icecreamgate, so he won't be playing any more baseball this year. Presumably we should be seeing Condor here pretty soon, as he recovers from both an in-game injury and some insane viral infection he picked up from his newborn daughter that sounds like a situation straight out of a David Cronenberg movie. Saunders is reporting to Arizona to get some at-bats before heading back, and tomorrow Erasmo Ramirez and James Paxton will join the team. Erasmo and Walker will both be used primarily out of the 'pen.

Today they will be facing A's righty Jason Hammel, who has been oddly terrible since coming to Oakland in the Jeff Samardzija trade earlier in the season. His best game so far was his previous one, a 3 hit, seven inning outing against the hapless Astros. The Mariners are not the Astros, but as we all know, they certainly have the tendency to pretend they are at times. Here's to hoping that doesn't happen today, despite the fact that Bob Melvin just called his team's play 'pathetic' after getting destroyed by the Angels, and they are probably going to be playing that comeback game today.

Oh, and yes, Adam Dunn will be making his A's debut, hoping to help stop the slide that brought them to only 4.5 games ahead of the M's in the most tumultuous division in all of baseball. This is probably going to be one of the most important games played across the league today. Welcome to the other side, folks.

Go M's.
