What's better than celebrating Lou Piniella's induction into the Mariners Hall of Fame? Watching the M's face off against Hector Noesi, of course.
Noesi last faced the Mariners on July 6, when he held them to 6 2/3 scoreless innings in the Sox' 1-0 shutout. He's been less fortunate in his five games since, getting shelled by both the Indians and the Tigers in six-run outings. He's given up at least one home run in each game and rates sixth among American League starters with 17 homers on the year. Even so, the 27-year-old is looking at his most valuable career year, with 0.4 fWAR after 24 appearances.
James Paxton will be making his second start since his rehab stint ended. In his start against the Orioles last week, he went 4 1/3 innings with two earned runs, a home run, three walks, and five strikeouts in the Mariners' 6-3 win. According to broadcaster Aaron Goldsmith, Paxton didn't feel in control of his slider/cutter and laid off the pitch during his first outing. We'll see if he sticks with this approach tonight or has more leeway to experiment.
