This evening I was joking around a bit on Twitter after Jon Heyman broke news that the Tigers and Rangers were discussing a trade around a couple big contracts, and what started out as an unrealistic pipe dream turned into reality in about a half hour. Heyman is reporting that the deal has been agreed to, and that the two sides are exchanging a couple of star players.
This involves the Mariners in absolutely zero ways, but it's too huge of a story not to place and talk about. Insanity. Fielder is due a bunch of money, and we're waiting to see if Detroit is sending over any cash.
A large part of our off-season plan hinged on the idea that Detroit needed to clear some money to keep Max Scherzer around, and that they needed a second baseman. We were right on both counts, but never could have expected this, and sure would have liked them to give the Mariners Austin Jackson for Nick Franklin instead.
Even though the Rangers are taking on a massive amount of money, they quickly insert Jurickson Profar into their infield, and just added a big time bat with at least a decent chance of bouncing back. Money aside - the Rangers just got better.
I am speechless. I am without speech. Details to be added as they are announced.
Update one:
Sources: Kinsler-for-Fielder indeed on verge of happening, as reported by @JonHeymanCBS. #Rangers get $$$.
