Last place! Last place! Last place! The Mariners are finally last in hitting! Whew! Wow. Just... so many people to thank. Let's see, there's Brendan Ryan, Chone Figgins of course. Some surprise help from Dustin Ackley, Justin Smoak and Ichiro Suzuki too. I didn't think you three were going to chip in as much as you did, but wow! Miguel Olivo, of course, can't forget about you!

Despite yesterday's outburst of two runs, this offense is still very much struggling to get hits of any variety and especially of the extra-base kind. And now Ichiro gets another day off. I wonder how much more often that is going to happen if his BABIP doesn't turn around. And really, again, it's pretty all BABIP with him.

How much of the career low in BABIP is a fluke is the important question with Ichiro. If it's mostly a fluke, then the rest of his game makes him a borderline All-Star again. His defense looks great, his baserunning is still good and his isolated hitting rates are satisfactory. But he needs to be hitting .310, not .260.

The outfield defense did not take an immediate and gigantic step forward. I am outraged! This is bupkis.

Of the seven pitchers who have starts for the Diamondbacks this season so far, only Wade Miley here and Josh Collmenter are products of Arizona's farm system. Until Erasmo made his start last week, of the five Mariner starting pitchers this year, only Felix came from the Mariner's farm system. I offer these with no additional context. It's what I found out after asking myself "Who the hell is Wade Miley?"

As you can see above, the average ground ball rate for relief pitchers this season is around 45%. Check out the rates for the Mariner relievers over the past double fortnight. Aside from Shawn Kelley, who thinks the outfield is lazy and needs more exercise, the pen has really been keeping the ball on the ground.

That is probably not so smally correlated to their just four home runs allowed and, as previously mentioned, slowly improving collective tRA. On 1 June, the pen was -15.5 in runs against average according to tRA. They've improved a lot for just 17 days.

Hey there, J.J. Putz, I see that you're still around. Unlike Brad Lidge who was recently released by the Nationals after being terrible. Those two are not related far as I can discern except that both are in their age-35 season. J.J. Putz has been quite good aside from the four home runs allowed this season in just 20 innings pitched.
