Brandon McCarthy
first nine starts, before his injury: 14% strikeouts, 3% free passes, 1 home run allowed
Since returning July 4 from the DL: 19% strikeouts, 4% free passes, 7 home runs allowed
I'm not sure which line I'd prefer honestly.
Michael Pineda enters the game with 156 strikeouts to 54 walks and hit batters. That's 2.9 strikeouts for every free pass permitted. Since basically baseball began back in 1901, only seven rookie pitchers have a higher strikeout to free pass rate in a qualifying season and two of those weren't exactly rookies in Rene Arocha and Hideo Nomo, both foreign imports. Of the other five, two are in the Hall of Fame (Don Sutton, Bert Blyleven), two were Hall of Fame bound (Doc Gooden, Gary Nolan) and one is still playing (Brett Anderson). That's fantastic company, Michael. Now stay healthy.
