7/31 Minor League Wrap-Up

- Though he started hot, 17 year old DSL catcher Hassiel Jimenez has cooled off considerably. Since July 17, Hassiel is 1 for his last 24, with 2 walks and 8 K, bringing his season line to 268/407/330. The wear of the long season and other factors are challenging the talented teenager.

- First person to photoshop a live action shot of Dennis Freaking Raben in an Aquasox uniform with the caption YOU GONNA GET RABED wins nothing other than my eternal amusement, and I'll throw in a Tasteless Photoshop Of The Month Award, worth a retail value of $nothing.

- Interesting decision for the T-Rats to go with reliever Keith Meyer as their SP yesterday. Per Chris Mehring @ Rattler Radio, Meyer's only other pro start was in early September of last year with the Aquasox, where he threw 5 scoreless innings, and his lengthiest outing of note this season was a 4.1 IP outing against West Michigan on April 30. Other than going 3 innings in his last outing on July 27, there was no other indication he was being stretched out to make a start.

That aside, he threw 5 innings of one run ball, striking out 5 on 5 hits. He got some luck in the 2nd after a single, when the next batter, Kevin Ahrens, lined into a 4-3 double play. He also got out of trouble in the 3rd with a man on 3rd and two out after a single, sac bunt and wild pitch. There were a lot of line drives off Meyer, but none led to any serious damage. Meyer did come out for the 6th, but got the quick hook after walking the leadoff batter, his only walk of the night.

Groundballs: 2 (plus 1 bunt)
Flyballs: 2
Line Drives: 6
Pop Ups: 2
Walks: 1
Strikeouts: 5

Joe Kantakevich continues a slow rebound from what has been a tough year for him with 1 run allowed over 3 innings of relief, and Robert Harmon finished with a scoreless 9th.

- And speaking of curious decisions to start relievers, the Mavs sent reliever Steve Uhlmansiek out to start last night's game against Lake Elsinore, and given the typical peril a Mavs pitcher faces in High Desert, Uhlmansiek didn't do all that badly. Oh, his outing wasn't good: there were too many walks, too many hitters got a good piece of his pitches and he allowed runs, getting taken deep towards the end of his outing by some guy named Tadahito Iguchi... but he got enough awkward contact to get into the 5th inning.

Groundballs: 7
Flyballs: 6 (1 HR)
Line Drives: 2
Pop Ups: 2
Walks: 4
Strikeouts: 1

Lake took a 6-5 lead in the 8th off Bryan Harris, but with some help by an infield error, the Mavs got 2 of their own in the bottom 8th to take the lead for good 7-6.

- If you want to know who threaded the needle and threw a rain-shortened 6 inning complete game shutout for the Rainiers against Round Rock, all I'm gonna say is go check the stats....

Cheney Stadium, empty. A rainstorm. PHAT ANDY 22 in a rain slicker.

PHAT ANDY 22: The rain in Spain falls mainly on the pain
of the suckas in Round Rock screwing up again
This ain't Nolan Ryan, bitches. Why can't you hit this?
This suck pitch down the middle, why can't you hit for distance?
The clouds were rolling in and this game was gonna stop
I had to hurry up before the water starts to drop
"Here it is now hit it," I said, throwing down the middle
But you popped my pitches up like you hacks were swinging fiddles
The wind was blowing out and the Rainiers were mashing
So not like these conditions create low scoring fashion
But eighteen outs later, we get to turn the page
And Phat Andy's a hero, now HIT ME, MC CRAIG....

Craig Wilson: Uh...
...
My name is Craig Wilson...
... and I like to hit-
PHAT ANDY: [epic pimp slap]
Craig Wilson: [facesplash into rain puddle]
PHAT ANDY: I have to take the reins back
From this muted lame hack
And here come the rains back
And I know what the Round Rock lacks
They can't get people on the sacks
The Phatman stops them in their tracks
And Rainiers come back hitting jacks
Just leave your bats up on the racks
You couldn't make the DIAMOND JAXX
You don't need numbers on your backs
You batboys are a bunch of hacks
So get your stuff and pack!

And exit out the BACK!

Word to your mother... Ray Sadler. Good thing it rained, cause I woulda owned you again.
