7/16 Minor League Wrap-Up

New, 11 comments

- Wow, did the rookie ballers fall asleep at the plate yesterday. The DSLMs, VSLMs and Pulaski Mariners combined for 17 hits in their respective losses.

Meanwhile, the Aquasox poured on 9 runs, and every starter in the T-Rats lineup had a hit. Go figure: it usually resembles the other way around.

- Dennis Freaking Raben was not in the lineup, but don't freak out or get excited: he just got the night off. After four years of playing four days a week, if that, between February and June, it can wear on a guy to suddenly play 10 games in 11 days... and that might have had something to do with his downturn the last few games. Aquasox manager Jose Moreno probably realized this, and decided to give the 2nd rounder a night off.

- Looks like the Mariners caught on with Bradley Reid: he pitched last night in relief for Everett, confirming a much-needed demotion. It was a considerable challenge to put the 30th round draft pick in the pitching hell of High Desert right after last month's draft, and probably too much of a challenge for the Renton native. If he was only there to fill in, I sure anyone could imagine about 10-15 better options.

- Speaking of pitching hell... with the Rainiers bullpen getting their rest and no longer requiring his emergency services, Justin Souza was demoted... but he did not return to Wisconsin. He made his first appearance with the High Desert Mavs, finishing the 6th for Ricky Orta with one out before working a scoreless 7th, allowing only one hit while striking out a couple batters... easily the most effective Mavs performance in a 6-1 loss.

- Greg Freaking Halman! In the DIAMOND JAXX's first game back from the Southern League All Star break, Halman unloaded for a 3 run bomb and 5 hits in West Tenn's 12-7 win over lowly Jacksonville.

He led a big game for the DIAMOND JAXX bats: Adam Moore hit a two out 7th inning GRAND SLAM, Johan Limonta and Jon Nelson also went yard, and Erick Monzon and Mike Wilson added two hits each. The wind wasn't blowing very hard, and the Jacksonville pitching staff, while not all that great, isn't horrible. So chalk it up to a fired up return by the DIAMOND JAXX... or maybe a fired up response to yet another crappy outing by Justin Thomas, who always seems to bookend his great starts with about 10 bad ones. Roman Martinez blew a lead in the 6th to cost Justin a shot at the win, but the grand slam by Moore gave Denny Stark the relief win, as it appears the career comeback bid for the 33 year old Stark has moved to the bullpen.

- As for the Southern League All Star Game... Mike Wilson went 0 for 3 with a walk and 2 Ks. Marshall Hubbard struck out in a pinch AB, stayed in at 1B and later drew a walk. The North All Stars beat the South All Stars 6-1. I'm sure that is epic news for everyone.

- Some Angels farmhand got the PCL MVP award at the AAA All Star game, which the PCL won, because the International league is a bunch of smallballing losers (I'M KIDDING, I'M KIDDING... about that last part).
