The San Diego Padres:
- finished a game and a half back of the Diamondbacks, who improbably bested their Pythagorean record by 11 wins
- got forced into a one-game playoff because the Rockies won 13 out of 14 to finish the year
- lost their starting center fielder and possibly their best bat in the same game a week before the end of the season (each of whom they badly needed tonight)
- handed a two-run lead over to their Hall of Fame closer in said one-game playoff and watched it slip away in an instant
The Mets have their staggering collapse, but all things considered, San Diego just wrapped up what has to have been one of the most frustrating regular seasons in Major League history. The Mariner meltdown had nothing on this.
