Categorizing Pitchers Part Two - Relievers

In a continuation of yesterday's article, Rich Lederer categorizes relievers by GB% and K-rate.  It's much the same Rich's article from yesterday, which I discussed here.

I won't discuss the article here in detail.  But I will note the Mariners relief corps includes two of the extreme outliers flagged by Rich.

  • J.J. Putz shows as the reliever with the highest K-rate among pitchers who are groundball pitchers.  High K-rate and lots of groundaballs?? Sounds good to me!!
  • Julio Mateo shows up as just about the most extreme flyball reliever in baseball, as well as having an extremely low strikeout rate.  Looking at the chart, you could argue that Julio Mateo might be Bobby Jenks' evil twin.
