Hey all - Dave here. Yes, that Dave. Sorry about USSM crashing in your hour of need. Glad to see you've made your way over to the equally awesome Lookout Landing for your Mariner community needs.
Judging from our inbox - holy crap, by the way, please don't be offended if we don't respond to your email - you all want to know what we think about today's shenanigans.
Overall - thumbs up, no doubt. A solid grade A effort for Bavasi for the day.
Going from Everett and Dobbs to Broussard and Snelling is a monstrous step up. Huge. Shapiro had the exact right idea when he built his platoon with Broussard/Perez for $5 million bucks - it's not quite as good as having an MVP candidate in the middle of the order, but it's close, and it's way cheaper. The performance improvement is going to be vast and noticable.
In addition, Broussard is under control through 2008, and Perez is here next year, so that's one less hole the team has to address this offseason. This isn't a rental - this is a roster upgrade for several years. You guys know I've never been a huge Shin Soo Choo guy - as a fourth outfielder who swings from the left side, he just isn't a good fit for an M's roster than contains Ibanez, Ichiro, and Snelling. Broussard is what we hoped Choo might become - an LHB who can't hit lefties or defend, but is somewhat useful despite those flaws. I'd have made this deal too.
I know some people are going to be upset with Snelling coming up to sit, but I don't really mind. He's better than Dobbs, so when that roster spot gets used once every other week or so, we'll have a better player on the field. And let's be honest - Snelling has nothing left to learn in Tacoma. He can hit falling out of bed - he doesn't need to learn anything else in Triple-A. His recent slump is an abberation. He's going to hit, and having him around in case Raul or Ichiro get hurt isn't a bad thing. He doesn't need more development in the PCL - if he doesn't play, it's not a big deal.
And no, this isn't a precursor to a Sexson deal before the deadline. The teams that want a first baseman are either in our division or want a LH first baseman. San Francisco was the only good fit for him, and they've got Hillenbrand now. I wouldn't be at all surprised if we explored a Sexson deal in the offseason, but not now. This is the offense we're going with, and it's a pretty good one.
So, be happy - be excited, even. We got better at little cost. Exciting September baseball, here we come.
