One of the most common complaints about the medical research field is that, despite all the time and resources it's had at its disposal, we're still without an effective cure for diseases like AIDS, cancer, or even a simple cold. To which I reply, bollocks! There are dozens of available treatments that can make the malady disappear in a pinch. It's just that we have yet to discover a cure for death, which is the unfortunate side-effect of each of them.
The way I figure, being a Mariners fan right now isn't really that different of a situation. We've all been infected, and once the Mariner fandom metastasized to our brains, we knew that we were in it for the long haul. It's not like we ever had a choice, either, because - just as with the aforementioned diseases - there's no quick and easy cure for being a fan of this team. The ideas that pop into my head from time to time generally involve jumping off of something tall or lighting myself on fire, but while both of these would solve the main issue at hand, they'd also give me a whole new problem to deal with.
