Minor League Wrap-Up: 7/25/05

Colorado Springs blew out Tacoma, 16-2. Obviously, not a good night for Cha Seung Baek (or Jeff Heaverlo...or Sean Green) as he didn't get through the third inning before giving up his tenth run. Jeff Heaverlo came in to stop the bleeding and failed miserably as he was touched up for another four runs in three innings. Not much sense in breaking down how bad the offense was, they didn't have a shot from the beginning.

Notables:

Cha Seung Baek: 2.1 IP, 12 H, 10 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 2 HR.
Jeff Heaverlo: 3.1 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 5 K.
Jamal Strong: 0-3, 1 BB.
Wiki Gonzalez: 0-4.
Greg Dobbs: 3-4.
Aaron Rifkin: 1-3, 1 2B.
Yuniesky Betancourt: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI.

San Antonio held off Corpus Christi, 7-4. The big catch from the Wilson Valdez blockbuster deal, Michael Bumstead, got the start in place of the hurt Ryan Rowland-Smith who is reportedly headed to the DL. Bumstead was nothing special and lasted only 4.1 innings giving up four runs on three hits while walking four and fanning one. Piece Two to the Wilson Valdez deal, R.D. Spiehs came in next to right the ship and give the offense a chance to take over. Scott Atchison also got an inning of work in. 1-6 hitters: 10-23, 2 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 7 RBI. 7-9 hitters: 0-12. Fun little meaningless split.

Notables:

Michael Bumstead: 4.1 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 1 K.
Jamie Bubela: 3-5.
Jesus Guzman: 1-4, 1 BB.
T.J. Bohn: 2-2, 1 HR, 1 BB, 1 RBI.
Nate Espy: 1-3, 1 2B, 2 BB, 2 RBI.
Jesse Hoorelbeke: 1-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI.
Jon Nelson: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 3B, 2 RBI.
Adam Jones: 0-3, 1 BB.

Inland Empire throttled Lancaster, 7-1. An excellent performance from Ryan Feierabend combined with a nice offensive attack and you have an easy, breezy win. Feierabend came out firing and didn't stop until he was pulled with two outs in the seventh. Feierabend finished going 6.2 innings and gave up one run on five hits while walking one and striking out one. Bryan Lahair had the big night with the bat as he smacked four hits including a double and picked up three RBI. Three other IE players (Boucher, Cabrera, Balentien) all had multi-hit nights.

Notables:

Ryan Feierabend: 6.2 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K.
Sebastien Boucher: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI.
Little Garciaparra: 1-5, 1 RBI.
Asdrubal Cabrera: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 3B.
Bryan Lahair: 4-5, 1 2B, 3 RBI.
Wladimir Balentien: 2-4, 1 2B.

Wisconsin had it's game rained out. Should be made up soon.

Everett handled Eugene, 5-3. Down 3-1 headed into the bottom of the 8th, check out Everett's creative way of getting the job done.

Pitcher Change: Alfredo Fernandez replaces John Madden.
Ronald Prettyman doubles (3) on a line drive to left fielder Drew Davidson. Casey Craig scores. Reed Eastley scores. Jeffrey Flaig to 3rd.

J. B. TuckerIII walks.
Luis Valbuena grounds out, second baseman Kelvin Vazquez to first baseman Daryl Jones.

Four runs, one hit. In fact, Everett only had four hits in the ENTIRE GAME. That's efficient "smallball" if there ever was such a thing. It's fun to compare the two starting pitchers and be baffled:

Justin Thomas: 5.0 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K.
Brenton Carter: 7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K. (A silly 37:2 K/BB this season)

Poor Brenton.

Notables:

Justin Thomas: See above.
Casey Craig: 0-4, 1 RBI.
Reed Eastley: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 BB.
Ron Prettyman: 2-4, 1 2B, 3 RBI.
Luis Valbuena: 0-4.
Bryan Sabatella: 0-2.
