Minor League Wrap-Up: 7/18/05

Tucson put Tacoma away late, 4-2. No knocks on Andrew Lorraine as he had yet another good start. The fault lies on Sean Green who, after striking out the first two batters in the ninth, gave up a two-run double to Andy Green. After the double, Green went on to walk Matt Kata, a guy who's walked six times in almost 200 AB's, so he must have been pretty shaken up. Tacoma's runs came early as Greg Dobbs, hitting in the 3-hole, had three hits with a double to lead the offense and Justin Leone chipped in with a pair of singles and a walk. Chris Snelling hasn't reported to Tacoma yet, so he was not in the lineup.

Notables:

Andrew Lorraine: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K.
Jamal Strong: 1-3, 1 3B, 1 BB.
Greg Dobbs: 3-4, 1 2B.
Justin Leone: 2-3, 1 BB, 1 RBI. (.280/.411/.467. Quietly putting together another nice season)
Hunter Brown: 1-4, 1 RBI.
Shin-soo Choo: 1-4.
Yuniesky Betancourt: 0-4.

Inland Empire edged Lake Elsinore, 4-3. After a combined five runs in the first inning by both offenses, the starting pitchers settled down markedly. Mumba Rivera finshed up going 5.1 innings for the 66'ers giving up three runs on five hits, walking two, striking out five and giving up a bomb. Headed into the seventh and the game tied up, Michael Nesbit doubled into left and was scored by Bryan Lahair's two-out single. Troy Cate held the lead in the eighth and the automatic Craig James picked up his eleventh save in the ninth.

Notables:

Mumba Rivera: 5.1 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 HR.
Sebastien Boucher: 0-3.
Little Garciaparra: 1-3.
Asdrubal Cabrera: 0-3, 1 BB.
Bryan Lahair: 2-4, 1 GW RBI.
Carlos Arroyo: 1-4, 1 3B, 2 RBI.
Wladimir Balentien: 1-4, 1 RBI.

Wisconsin held on to beat Kane County, 9-8. When you're up five runs headed into the ninth, things should go pretty smoothly. But, sometimes things like this happen:

Pitcher Change: Adam Brandt replaces Eric O'Flaherty.
Raul Padron walks.
Nicholas Blasi singles on a line drive to center fielder Chris Colton. Raul Padron to 2nd.
David Castillo singles on a line drive to left fielder Brent Johnson. Raul Padron to 3rd. Nicholas Blasi to 2nd.
Pitcher Change: Jon Lockwood replaces Adam Brandt.
Gregorio Petit singles on a line drive to left fielder Brent Johnson. Raul Padron scores. Nicholas Blasi to 3rd. David Castillo to 2nd.
Clifton Pennington reaches on force attempt, fielding error by shortstop Matt Tuiasosopo. Nicholas Blasi scores. David Castillo to 3rd. Gregorio Petit to 2nd.
Luis Perez strikes out swinging.
Javier Herrera singles on a ground ball to center fielder Chris Colton. David Castillo scores. Gregorio Petit scores. Clifton Pennington to 2nd.
Tommy Everidge strikes out swinging.
Myron Leslie strikes out swinging.

So much for Jon Lockwood being invincible, huh? The best part about it is that he still gets the save and he still struck out the side.

Mark Lowe originally get the start in this one and wasn't terribly effective as he lasted only the minimum giving up four runs on five hits while walking three, stiking out six and allowing a homerun. Everyone in the lineup not named Yung Chi Chen or Robert Johnson managed at least one hit with Brent Johnson, Mike Wilson and Chris Colton all collecting two.

Notables:

Mark Lowe: 5.0 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 6 K, 1 HR.
Brent Johnson: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI.
Mike Wilson: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI.
Thomas Hubbard: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 BB.
Matt Tuiasosopo: 1-3, 1 BB.
Chris Colton: 2-3, 2 RBI.
Oswaldo Navarro: 1-4.

Everett destroyed Spokane (again), 12-2. Robert Fagan was solid in his six innings of work in this one but it didn't matter as much as it would in most games as the Aquasox came out hitting. Everett built a 5-1 lead after the third, extending it to 10-1 by the time the sixth was over. Both Casey Craig and Trevor Heid had three hits with Craig going yard. Jeff Flaig also homered en route to his two hits.

Notables:

Robert Fagan: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K.
Casey Craig: 3-5, 1 HR, 3 RBI.
Luis Valbuena: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 BB.
Jeff Flaig: 2-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI.
Daniel Santin: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 BB, 3 RBI.
Trevor Heid: 3-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI.
Bryan Sabatella: 1-5.
