Spiezio Hurting/Choo Called Up

Even when he does something good, he does something bad.

While an announcement will have to wait for a doctor's examination in Seattle, Scott Spiezio looked like a candidate for the disabled list yesterday after he felt something pull in his left side during his ninth-inning at-bat Monday.

During pregame hitting yesterday, the Mariners' utility player was in the clubhouse, bandaged tightly around the midsection, with a hot pad strapped snugly against the left side of his rib cage -- the same area he hurt last April when he strained an oblique muscle.

We should hear more about this injur during tonight's broadcast. A DL stint for Spiezio could (and should) mean another Justin Leone sighting.

UPDATE: As DJC so enthusiastically reported in the comments section, Spiezio has indeed been DL'd, but with an unexpected consequence - Shin-soo Choo has been called up. We don't know how long he'll be on the bench, but as long he sticks around, he should be the talented left-handed bat that Hagrove thinks Greg Dobbs is. Don't look for Choo in the lineup tonight; not only is a lefty on the hill, but Willie Bloomquist is 7-22 in his career against Zito, which is the kind of throwaway stat that managers just love to reward with playing time.
