Rule 5 Draft

One of the events that take place at the Winter Meetings, which start tomorrow and run through Thursday, is the Rule 5 Draft. There are some interesting names available this season, and Baseball America does a great job highlighting the top names available. The chances of the M's selecting anyone during the Major League portion are slim, but here are some names to watch nonetheless:

Kevin Howard - Might be the best player available in the Rule 5, simply because he could contribute next season. Howard swings a solid left handed bat and plays good defense at second and third. Could be a solid, cheap option for any bench.

Licoln Holdzkom - Returned in 2005 after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2004. Solid arm pre-surgery, should regain plus fastball as he puts the TJ surgery in the rearview mirror. Probably not ready for a Major League job, but was/is Matt Thornton?

Brandon Sing - Pretty similar to Ryan Shealy. He has a very good bat, light tower power, a terrific eye and an iron glove. Best suited for bench work or DH duties, making him an ideal AL pickup.

Casey Daigle - Has developed into quite the groundball pitcher. Effective out of the bullpen in AA. However, his best attribute might be his other half, wife Jennie Finch.

Some other interesting names: P Billy Murphy, P Chris Cooper, P Billy Sadler, OF Jason Pridie.
