I wouldn’t say the Seattle Mariners organization is the deepest system in the majors but it has some of the best upper-tier talent among the 30 baseball clubs. What’s even more impressive with the organization is that so many of those top prospects are pitchers and up-the-middle position players. Also, unlike a lot of the top systems in the game, the bulk of Seattle’s talent is at the double-A and triple-A level suggesting better days are ahead for the Mariners and their fans.

Baseball America's PCL Top 20 Prospects

+

BA's list of the top 20 prospects in the PCL is mighty impressive. The Mariners have four representatives, Pineda at #3, Ackley at #5, Smoak at #9 and Halman at #18. That seems about right to me. BA's perhaps predictably a bit higher on Pineda than John Sickels seems to be, and they're still impressed with Halman's physical tools. Ackley at 5/Smoak at 9 also feel about right.

1. Ackley, 2. Triunfel, 3. Moore, 4. Saunders, 5. Poythress, 6. Aumont, 7. JC Ramirez, 14. Halman, 11 of Churchill's top-30 were drafted, signed, or traded for under Zduriencik's leadership: 1. Ackley, 5. Poythress, 8. Fields, 13. James Jones, 17. Kyle Seager, 18. Mike Carp, 19. Nick Franklin, 20. Guillermo Pimentel, 21. Steven Baron, 23. Mauricio Robles, 25. Maikel Cleto This doesn't include Derrick Saito or Dan Cortes, who were not on Churchill's list. I was surprised by this. I thought they'd be in the 20s.
